Reforestation - restoring habitat

Our major reforestation work is in Way Kambas National Park Sumatra. Our projects are long-term with a target of 20 years to ensure maximum success. Reforestation projects require constant policing, rapid fire fighting responses, ongoing seed collection and water supply for seedlings. To date we have supported the planting of close to 2 million trees and a further 3 million through self propagation in protected regeneration areas.

When SIES first started its reforestation projects in the Bungur area (constituting 30% of Way Kambas NP - 300 sq km), the area was severely degraded from regular burning over many years and mostly imperata grass of minimal ecological value.
Historically it provided a healthy tiger habitat with forest, swamps and rivers, supporting a large population of Sambar deer and other prey species. Way Pegadungan provides a river boundary, protecting both humans and tigers. Intense protection is needed on this side of the Park as it has been subject to ongoing fire-setting, illegal buffalo grazing and deer poaching.
